Furrow

that last Sunday you wanted
to hear my family making lunch
the clatter of kitchen noise

you weren’t feeling well       lying in bed
so I laid down with you
and we talked    took a selfie

I almost asked you if you were afraid to die
and two weeks later you faced it
with what can only be called grace

the pain mostly contained by morphine
I watched you go     the drugs
not quite enough to smooth the furrow in your brow
