Sadness Rejects Me
tonight, even sadness rejects me.
I hang from the tree outside your window,
spinning in the wind like an ornament,
as lifeless as a marionette with cut strings.
the wind howls like a coyote at the moon.
tonight, even sadness rejects me.
the earth’s softness is gone.
the ground is colder than a beggar’s shawl.
the moon responds to the wind
by dimming her light toward oblivion.
tonight, even the sadness rejects me.
even my darkness will not hold me near.
my heart is frozen in mid-beat.
your silhouette is no longer in your window.
I crumple to the ground like a beaten pinata.
tonight, even sadness rejects me.
